Did you know that Balsa wood is the softest wood in the world?

With young children – especially 3-5 year olds it makes a huge difference to their first experience of woodworking if they are given a very soft wood to begin.

Our balsa wood is lightweight and is very soft. It is super easy for children to saw, hammer and screw!

By using balsa wood first, children will master the skills and techniques of woodworking far easier than if they start off on harder wood. The quick success that soft balsa wood brings means kids gain confidence fast and have a positive experience that encourages them to keep going on their woodworking journey.

Our Balsa Wood Off-Cuts are:

Although grown sustainably, balsa wood is in high demand and is hard to source. This makes it quite expensive compared to our regular wood offcuts so we recommend using it sparingly for children who are learning to use tools for the very first time. But, you certainly won’t regret spending a little bit extra to get them off to that flying start! Once your kids have had a few goes with balsa they will be able to easily transition to our economical wood offcuts.
