WHAT TYPE OF WOOD IS IT?

The wood we use is Macrocarpa (Cupressus Macrocarpa). It is grown locally in New Zealand.

Our wood is 100% untreated, clean and dry. It comes straight from the sawmill so there is no risk of dangerous contaminates that are common in recycled timber.

Our wood is compatible with all other craft materials commonly used such as PVA glue, hot glue, paint, dyes etc.

IS YOUR WOOD HARD?

Macrocarpa is considered a "soft wood" which is best for children to begin with. Macrocarpa is similar in hardness to pine.

If your children are struggling to hammer their nails into the wood then there are several things you can do to help:

  • Check the size of your nails. The bigger they are, the harder they are to hammer into the wood.

  • Avoid nailing on or close to knots on the wood. The wood around the knots are often much harder. Encourage kids to nail in another spot.

  • Use a hand drill to drill pilot holes first. This creates a hole for the nail to follow and reduces the chance of the wood splitting.

  • Make sure that your carpentry bench is on a hard surface. If your bench is on carpet, grass, bark or dirt then the soft ground will absorb some of the impact of the child hammering. That means children have to exert more force with each hit. A firm floor such as concrete or decking is best - plus it makes finding dropped nails much easier!
