What is a Pilot Hole?
A pilot hole is a small hole (a little bit smaller than the size of the nail or screw you're using) that's drilled into the wood before inserting your nail or screw. Pilot holes help to guide the nail or screw into the wood and make it much easier to hammer or screw them in. Pilot holes also help to reduce the risk of the wood splitting or cracking.

Encouraging kids to make pilot holes when working on their projects is a great idea because it can help to prevent frustration and disappointment from the wood splitting or their nail/screw going in the wrong place.
