The secret to drilling is to hold the brace steady while applying some downward pressure so that the drill bites into the wood.

Brace drills are quite tall so it can be easier for children to work with this tool on the floor. Drilling into the wood with the benefit of having their weight above to hold it steady and apply some downward pressure.

Another option which works well is to clamp the piece of wood in a vice and use the brace horizontally. This way the child can lean into the drill and use their body weight to apply pressure. With their hands low in front of them, it is easy to rotate the crank.
